Hedychium (Ginger Lily)

Hedychium

Hedychium “Ginger Lily,” also known as “Garland Flower.  Tall stems bear long leaves, and at the top there are spectacular delicately fragrant flower clusters  bearing prominent stamens  They bloom in late summer and fall and flower over a 6 week period.  Tolerates moist soil.  Hummingbirds and butterflies love them.  For outdoor cultivation treat as a CannaZones 7-11.

Hedychium Coccineum is one of the most beautiful of the Hedychium gingers. Also known as Orange Gingerlily, Scarlet Gingerlily, and Orange Bottlebrush Ginger, the flowers can range in color from red to orange to almost yellow. It can tolerate strong sunshine but if kept in the shade, it grows taller.

Hedychium Coronarium. Also known as “Butterfly Ginger” or “Cinnamon Ginger.” From midsummer through autumn the stalks are topped with 6-12 in long clusters of wonderfully fragrant white flowers that look like butterflies and smell like gardenias. The flowers eventually give way to showy seed pods chock full of bright red seeds.

Hedychium Greenii (also known as Red Butterfly Ginger) has bold salmon red flowers shaped like ruffled butterflies with a delicate scent. It produces small plantlets after blooming on the bloom's end, which can be planted to produce other plants. The foliage is beautiful with maroon/red undersides. Does best in a little shade.
