Originally from South Africa, Eucomis is also known as the Pineapple Lily.  It's easy to spot the origin of its common name when the plant is in flower, with a leafy crown atop its floral spike consisting of many star-shaped flowers.  Unless you live in the deep south it's best to grow it as a container plant and move it outside when it is warm.  In summer when it is in active growth, be sure to water frequently and generously.  The leaves die down in winter.  Keep it dry until growth starts again in the Spring.
