Hostas (Spring)

Hostas

Hostas are extremely popular, hardy herbaceous perennials grown primarily for their beautiful foliage. They are easy to grow, shade-tolerant plants. Their leaves come in a wide range of shapes, colors, sizes, and textures and may be solid in color or variegated in different combinations of blue, green, white, and gold. The plants are low maintenance.  Also known as Plantain Lilies they are great for providing color and texture interest in troublesome, dark areas of your garden.  Most Hostas send up long stems with bell-shaped flowers in mid-summer.  Hostas may take a couple of years to develop some size. A common saying about most perennials that especially applies to Hostas is, "The first year they sleep; the second they creep and the third they leap."
